Are you protecting your skin from damaging enough? Unveiling the Importance of SPF and How to Prevent Skin Damage.[1,2,3]

Let's choose and use sunscreen effectively for skin protection.

Sunscreen: Your Shield Against UV (Ultraviolet) Damage:

1. Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays that reach the earth — UVA rays and UVB rays. â€‹

2. UVA rays contribute to causing long-term damage and skin wrinkles & spots, leading to aging, while UVB rays cause sunburn.

3. Sunscreen acts as a protective barrier against these rays from the sun.

4. It prevents sunburn and premature aging and lowers the risk of skin cancer.

Understanding SPF

1. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates sunscreen's ability to block UVB rays.

2. Higher SPF means more extended protection.

3. An SPF of 30 or higher is recommended - which blocks 97% of the sun's UVB rays but not 100%.

4. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield against UVA and UVB rays.

5. Water-resistant sunscreens are ideal for swimming or activities that involve sweating.

Skin Type Matters

1. Consult a dermatologist for personalized SPF recommendations based on your skin type.

2. People with fair skin are more prone to sun damage and should use higher SPF.

Timing Gambits:

1. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure.

2. Sunscreens should be reapplied every two hours outdoors, even on cloudy days.

How Much?

1. Use a generous amount – to cover your body adequately.

3. Remember often neglected areas like ears, neck, and the back of your hands.

Children and Sunscreen

Children under six months should avoid direct sun exposure.

Use sunscreen specifically formulated for kids with SPF 30 or higher for older children.

Using sunscreen isn't just a beauty ritual; it's crucial to your overall dermal health.
