Parents Health Insurance

Parents Health Insurance

Parents' health insurance is a specially designed plan that provides financial protection against medical emergencies for your ageing parents. These plans include hospitalisation costs, day care treatments, OPD visits, international treatments and so on. Since these plans are designed to cover your ageing parents’ needs, the coverage is customisable with high range of sum insured.

By 2025, the elderly population was expected to reach 158.7 million, and is expected to grow further by 2050, which highlights an increasing need for health insurance coverage that understands the evolving needs and supports your parents. This is where we come in, with comprehensive policies and top-notch features that support your needs.

At IndusInd General Insurance (previously known as Reliance General Insurance), we offer tailored parents’ health insurance with customisable plans, international coverage across 7 continents and a high sum insured of up to ₹5 crore. In addition to providing stress-free healthcare attention, our health insurance for parents leaves you calm, knowing your loved ones are taken care of during unexpected events.

Why Do You Need Dedicated Medical Insurance for Parents?

Employer Health Insurance is Often Not Enough

Most corporate health plans have low sums insured (₹2–5 lakhs) and strict limits. A single hospitalisation for parents, especially in private hospitals, can exhaust this cover very quickly. But a health insurance that considers high medical needs and offers features like unlimited restoration or double cover helps sustain the high medical costs.

Medical Costs Rise Sharply After 50

With age, the chances of hospital visits increase due to lifestyle diseases, surgeries, or sudden emergencies. Treatments, such as CABG, orthopaedic surgeries and cancer treatment can easily cross ₹5–10 lakhs today in Indian cities. Plus, with highest annual medical inflation rate of 14%, treatment can cost even more in the future.

Parents Often Have Pre-Existing Conditions

According to NITI Aayog, 75% of India’s elderly population have at least 1 chronic condition like diabetes, BP, heart issues, or arthritis. In other words, every fourth Indian person over 60 years of age has poor health. Thus, a dedicated medical policy for parents ensures they are covered after the waiting period and provides adequate coverage for related costs.

Family Floater Plans Get Strained

Including parents in a family floater increases premiums sharply and reduces coverage for everyone. But a separate policy designed to protect only parents with specialised coverage and higher limits ensures coverage for all, without compromising your spouse’s or children’s health cover.

Cashless Treatment During Emergencies

In emergencies, arranging money is the last thing families should worry about. A parents’ health insurance plan with strong hospital networks ensures smoother, faster, cashless treatment. With over 10,000+ network of reputed hospitals* spread across the country, you can ensure getting quick treatments for your parents.

It Protects Your Savings and Your Peace

Medical emergencies can wipe out years of savings meant for children’s education or retirement. A dedicated plan ensures your parents get the care they deserve without putting financial pressure on the family. In addition, you also save more on taxes for premiums paid towards your ageing parents’ health insurance.

What’s Covered and Not Covered Under Parents Health Insurance?

What is Covered?

Hospitalisation Cover: Coverage for in-patient care is sometimes inclusive of medicine costs, doctor fees, and room rent.

Day 1 Coverage: We offer day 1 coverage under our parents’ health insurance for accident-related claims and medical emergencies, ensuring prompt and comprehensive coverage.

Pre and Post Hospitalisation:
Financial support for approximately 60 and 90 days. Some plans include diagnostic charges, consultations, and follow-up treatments

OPD Treatment: Coverage for outpatient expenses like diagnostic tests, prescription drugs, consultations, and dental treatment.

AYUSH: Includes cover for alternate treatments under AYUSH and Modern treatments, like robotics surgery, stem cell therapy and more.

Pre-existing Diseases: Covered after a 3-year waiting period. Parents with pre-existing diseases will be covered, depending on the plan you choose, and we also offer options to reduce the waiting period to 1 or 2 years.

Cataract Treatments: Coverage for cataract surgery, up to a limit specified in the plan.

Home Care and Day care: Covered within the sum insured if parents need medical treatment at home.

Organ Donor & Modern Treatments: Surgery costs for donors and modern treatments like robotic surgeries are covered under the sum insured.

What is Not Covered?

Non-Medical Treatments: All medically necessary expenses are covered. But treatments such as wellness therapies, dietary supplements, and cosmetic surgeries are not included.

Lifestyle and Fertility Treatments: Procedures related to weight management, fertility or infertility, contraception, and vision correction are not covered under the policy.

Legal and Statutory Exclusions: Medical expenses arising from self-inflicted injuries, suicide attempts, war, nuclear risks, or involvement in illegal activities are not payable.

OPD & Congenital Conditions: OPD expenses linked to hospitalisation are covered. For full OPD coverage, an OPD add-on is required. Congenital conditions are generally not covered; please contact us for clarity on specific cases.

Waiting Periods: Accident-related claims are covered from day one. Other illnesses have a standard 30-day waiting period, while pre-existing diseases have separate waiting periods that can be reduced with add-ons.

Experimental or Unapproved Treatments: Treatments that are not recognised or approved by the IRDAI or the World Health Organization (WHO) are not covered.

Disclaimer: For the complete list of Inclusions and Exclusions, please refer to the policy wording here.

Things to Consider Before Purchasing the Best Health Insurance for Parents

As parents grow older, hospital visits can shift from “maybe” to “anytime.” A plan with high sum insured and no room rent limits ensures you don’t have to compromise on treatment when emergencies strike unexpectedly.

How our plan helps: Higher coverage options and wide hospital access reduce last-minute stress.
Blood pressure, diabetes, heart issues or joint problems often exist long before symptoms worsen. Choosing a plan with a shorter waiting period for pre-existing diseases is crucial when parents need care sooner, not years later.

How our plan helps: Flexible PED waiting periods with add-ons help with getting quicker coverage for specific illnesses.
A single hospitalisation today can cost what used to cover years of care. With India’s medical costs rising sharply, relying on savings alone can hamper your financial plans.

How our plan helps: High sum insured options of up to ₹5 crores* and global coverage protect savings from sudden medical shocks
When you live in a different city or country, emergencies feel heavier. Parents shouldn’t struggle with approvals, paperwork or hospital coordination while you’re rushing to reach them.

How our plan helps: Cashless hospitalisation and quick claims support reduce chaos during emergencies
Parents often need multiple admissions for the same or related illnesses. Without features like sum insured restoration, coverage can run out faster than expected.

How our plan helps: Automatic restoration ensures coverage stays available when it’s needed most.
The guilt of “What if something happens and I’m not prepared?” stays at the back of every caregiver’s mind. A good parents’ health insurance plan is as much about emotional relief as financial protection.

How our plan helps: Comprehensive coverage lets you focus on being there for your parents—not worrying about hospital bills.

How are Premiums Calculated for Parents’ Health Insurance?

Health insurance premiums for parents are calculated based on risk and expected medical costs. You can also calculate an estimate of premium based on your unique requirements using our online premium calculator given above, before choosing the best medical insurance for your parents. Since parents are usually older and more likely to need medical care, insurers look at a few key factors to decide the premium.

Age of Your Parents

Age is the biggest factor. Premiums increase as parents move into higher age brackets (60+, 70+), because the chances of hospitalisation, surgeries, and chronic illnesses are higher.

Pre-Existing Health Conditions

Conditions like diabetes, BP, heart issues or arthritis affect premiums. These conditions are considered as they can increase future treatment costs while calculating the premium.

Sum Insured Chosen

Higher coverage means higher premiums but also better protection. For parents, a higher sum insured is often recommended because hospital bills rise quickly during emergencies.

Type of Plan Selected

Senior citizen–specific plans usually cost more than regular family floater plans, but they offer age-appropriate benefits like lower co-pay stress, day-care coverage, and simpler claims.

Co-Payment and Deductibles

Plans with mandatory co-payments (where you share part of the bill) or higher deductibles generally have lower premiums. This is common and helps keep premiums affordable.

Add-Ons and Optional Covers

Add-ons like OPD cover, reduction in waiting period, or higher room rent increase the premium slightly—but can save a lot later, especially for frequent doctor visits.

City of Residence

Medical costs vary across India. Parents living in metro cities usually attract slightly higher premiums due to higher hospital and treatment costs.

How to Save Tax on Parents Health Insurance Policy?

animation icon
Use Section 80D’s Separate Limit for Parents

Under Section 80D, you get an additional deduction just for parents’ health insurance.

●    Up to ₹25,000 if parents are below 60
●    Up to ₹50,000 if one or both parents are senior citizens (over 60 years)

This is over and above your own health insurance deduction.

animation icon
Pay the Premium Yourself (Not Your Parents)

To claim the tax benefit, you must pay the premium from your own bank account. Even if the policy is in your parents’ names, the deduction is allowed only to the person who pays.

animation icon
Claim Preventive Health Check-up Expenses

You can claim up to ₹5,000 per year for parents’ preventive health check-ups under Section 80D. This amount is within the overall 80D limit, but it helps when no hospitalisation has happened.

animation icon
Senior Citizen Parents? Medical Bills Can Count Too

If your parents are 60+ and not covered by health insurance, you can still claim up to ₹50,000 for their medical expenses under Section 80D. This is especially useful when insurers deny coverage due to age or health conditions.
