Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need a travel adapter? What plugs/voltage does Sri Lanka use?

Sri Lanka uses Type D, G & M plugs and 230V/50Hz power. However, to be on the safe side, make sure to carry a universal adapter.

Can I drive in Sri Lanka with my Indian licence?

You generally need an International Driving Permit, plus a temporary Sri Lankan recognition/driver’s permit. From August 3, 2025, BIA airport will issue temporary driving permits upon arrival.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Sri Lanka?

Not mandatory for Indian travellers at the moment. Sri Lankan immigration doesn’t insist on having a specific policy. That said, many airlines, tour operators and visa‑extension applicants prefer to see coverage. Therefore, you should purchase a plan that meets your trip needs.

Can I purchase travel insurance after booking my tickets?

Absolutely. You can purchase IndusInd Sri Lanka Travel Insurance at any time before departure, even minutes prior. Coverage starts from the policy start time, so don’t wait till you’re already in Colombo; events that occur before the start date/time aren’t payable.

Can I extend my IndusInd Sri Lanka Travel Insurance while I’m already in Sri Lanka?

Yes, before your policy expires, you can usually request an extension. However, this is subject to no prior claims, unchanged health status and insurer approval.

Can I pay in Sri Lanka using UPI?

Yes. LankaPay now accepts Indian UPI payments (e.g., PhonePe) at LankaQR merchants, so you can scan and pay in INR with live FX conversion. However, we still recommend carrying hard cash. Another useful tip is to carry US dollars if you want to save money. You’ll get a far better exchange rate than buying LKR directly in India or exchanging Indian rupees. Get US Dollars in 100 denominations, as they have a higher demand.

Do Indians need a Yellow Fever certificate?

Only if you’re arriving from, or transiting for more than 12 hours through, a Yellow‑Fever‑risk country. Otherwise, Indians don’t need it if you are travelling directly from India.

Is getting mobile data easy in Sri Lanka? Do they support eSIMs?

Yes. Dialog and other operators support eSIMs, and global eSIM providers (such as Airalo and Nomad) piggyback on local networks for 4G/5 G connectivity.

Is KYC mandatory to buy travel insurance from India?

Yes. IndusInd General Insurance follows IRDAI’s rule, so KYC is compulsory. You’ll need to complete e‑KYC with PAN and passport (and, if asked, Aadhaar) for every insured traveller. You can do it within minutes if you’ve got your documents stored on DigiLocker.

Is baggage cover really worth it?

Yes. Bags do go missing or arrive late. With IndusInd, you’re covered for a checked-in baggage delay of 12 hours or more and total loss.
